The commission brings together representatives from the main European foundry trade associations and provides a valuable opportunity for an exchange of ideas and best practice as well as an opportunity to discuss forthcoming European regulations and directives.
Andrew Harris, plant director at the Telford site, welcomed delegates with a short introduction about the history of the company and its products. He explained how the company had prioritised a continually improving safety and health culture and performance, led from the top down, and was constantly seeking ways to ensure the employees operate as safely and efficiently as possible. This involved consideration of aspects of leadership, working conditions, systems and behaviour.
Organised by the Cast Metals Federation, as the UK member of CAEF, with staff from Saint Gobain Pam UK, the two-day visit enabled the European delegates to have a tour of the foundry to see first-hand many of the operational changes that have been made there over several years; this helped to inform the discussions at the meetings that followed. They were also invited to visit the famous Iron Bridge, built by Abraham Darby III in 1779.
CAEF (Committee of Association of European Foundries) is the umbrella organisation of the European foundry industry and was established in 1953. It now has 21 countries represented in membership, and deals with economic, technical, legal, and social issues.
