According to a recent announcement by the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA), the European Union (EU)’s steel industry and some related industries such as the automotive, technology, home appliance and wind power generation had all questioned the necessity of EU safeguard measures.
CLEPA said that the EU''s imports dropped slightly year on year in 2018, so it did not pose a major threat to domestic industries. Among them, the volume of steel imported from the US declined by 3 million tons, and the total volume of imports in 2018 totaled about 165 million tons.
Some steel producers believed that EU safeguard measures would lead to higher steel prices and a decline in EU steel supply. CLEPA believed that EU safeguard measures did not take downstream demand into consideration, and the competitiveness of EU steel industry needed to be protected.
