Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, produced 1,242,687 tonnes of copper in 2018, a 34% increase over 2017 due to having increased its concentrator capacity and a lack of industrial strike action. Profits grew 41% to USD 1.68 billion. Output at the BHP-operated Chile copper mine included 975,893 tonne of copper in concentrates and 266,794 tonne of copper cathodes. The mine experienced 44 days of strike action in 2017.

Mr Mauro Neves president said that "We are happy with the positive results from 2018. The challenges, however, are growing because as the deposit ages we face deeper pits, lower grades and harder rock, as well as more demanding standards. All of this obliges us to continue to focus on improving productivity, controlling costs and incorporating technological advances.”
