Recently, members of World Trade Organization (WTO) have requested to set up a special investigation team on US steel and aluminum tariffs, including China, India, European Union, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.
Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation also joined the protest and asked the WTO to organize an arbitration panel to deal with tariff issue, and requested the US to defend this issue in investigation meeting.
Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation mentioned that the proposal of tariff reciprocal consultation was failed to reach a consensus. The EU negotiated with the US in July, but failed to resolve the dispute. Meanwhile, China, Turkey and Norway also proposed to negotiate with the US.
However, the US claimed that tariff measures were based on national security instead of protective activity, and was willing to continue consultations.
Besides, Turkish steel industry also hoped that the US could reduce import tariffs to 25%, but the US still relied on national security without further action.
