The outlook for the mining sector has become more pessimistic in recent months due to trade tensions between the US and China, Fitch Ratings says. Prices for several commodities, including copper, nickel and zinc, fell sharply in July due to investor concerns about global growth. Trade tensions showed no sign of easing and were likely to be the key influence on prices
The short-term copper price fell below US$6,000/ton during July, largely driven by geopolitical worries. However, trade concerns have not yet led to lost consumption. Future copper demand and prices would benefit from the growth in electric vehicle demand. Full battery-powered vehicles contained around four times as much copper as a conventional medium-size car.
