Reuters reported that Chinese imports of unwrought copper and concentrates fell in April from the previous month. China customs data showed that as demand from the top consumer and producer of the metal eased amid a subdued outlook for industrial activity. It said that April imports of copper fell 30.2% from a month ago to 300,000 tonnes and were down by a third from a year ago.
Copper concentrate and ore imports dropped 16.6% from a month earlier to 1.36 million, though that marked a 7.9% increase from a year earlier.
Ms Helen Lau an analyst at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong said that "It was mainly due to weak domestic demand and also China''s output remained strong, so the country didn''t need to import as much.¡±
Copper imports to China, the world''s leading copper and aluminium consumer, include anode, refined, alloy and semi-finished copper products.
China exported 430,000 tonnes of unwrought aluminium and aluminium products, including primary, alloy and semi-finished aluminium products, in April, up from March''s 410,000 tonnes.
The most-traded copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell 3.5% last month as broad industry sentiment pointed to slackening demand at home and abroad.
Authorities in China are moving to tackle property market risks and credit growth. Though the authorities are treading cautiously to avoid hurting the economy, analysts still fear Beijing''s moves could dampen China''s appetite for metals.
