Indian government has set up an independent laboratory to retest imported steel based upon the standard of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Based upon the source, New Delhi claimed the significance of re-testing requirement so that public safety with application of steel can be assured in a way.
However, the EU argued the necessary of re-testing requirement and took it as a non-tariff barrier to trade during the last meeting of WTO’s Committee on TBT (Trade Barrier to Trade).
India, somehow, refused EU’s suggestion and insisted in re-testing practice which would strengthen the grants of BIS certificates.
India also stated that its “Quality Control Order” for stainless steel products was applied not only for foreign producer for also for domestic ones. They only accepted the proposal of exempting steel mills with ISO 9001 certification from factory inspections.
