The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM) requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up an expert group to judge the trade dispute arisen from the US’ tariffs on steel and aluminum based on Section 232. The MOFCOM hoped that the WTO expert group could judge this case with an objective and fair attitude to maintain the multilateral trading system.
The MOFCOM said that China has negotiated with the US according to WTO rules, but they failed to resolve the problems with the consultation. It was understood that the US’ Section 232 has seriously damaged the multilateral trading rules and was opposed by many members of the WTO.
