According to Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), the country’s imports of stainless steel have gone up to around 40% of the country’s consumption, which forced national operating capacity declined to 50% in this financial year.
President of ISSDA, N C Mathur, said that Chinese imports share 25% of the total imported 40% of stainless steel.
In fact, until the last financial year, the total imports of stainless steel from all countries was about 100,000 tons but the total imports from China alone have increased to 250,000 tons in the first half of current financial year.
The stainless steel industry in India has invested about Rs 30,000 crore to build capacity of around 3.5 million tons per year, with this production capacity, India ranks as the 3rd largest producer and 2nd largest consumer of stainless steel.
