According to data from Spain''s Union of Iron and Steel Companies (UNESID), the country in the Iberian Peninsula produced 14.2 million tons of steel in 2021, an increase of 27% compared to 2020.
Despite the good performance of 2021, at the beginning of 2022, there is a threat to the Spanish steel sector. Andr¨¦s Barcel¨®, general director of UNESID, commented that although 2022 started with good market prospects like 2021, electricity and gas prices posed a very serious threat to the sector.
In fact, during most part of 2021, the monthly steel production was higher than the comparable figure for 2020, except in November and December, months in which the increase in the price of electricity affected production, making it lower than in the same months of the previous year.
