It was reported that last week market participants paid close attention to nickel trends to predict the alloy surcharge for December.
The alloy surcharge for December was calculated on the nickel price between October 21st and November 20th. Up to now, the average three-month nickel price and cash nickel price were US$16,243/ton and US$17,282/ton respectively.
Market participants expected alloy surcharge for December to fall, but the recent rise in nickel price has caused them to lose confidence in dropping alloy surcharge.
At present, stainless steel scrap traders are negotiating the alloy surcharge for December. In view of the previous agreement to use the nickel price of the London Metal Exchange (LME) as the purchase price of nickel-containing scrap, the current purchase price in November is 55-58% of the nickel price, which is at the historically low level, therefore December price would probably keep flat.
