In 2011, SMACNA National released DALC, its mobile app designed to allow building and design professionals the ability to simply and accurately estimate ductwork air leakage. Leveraging methodology and technical specifications outlined in SMACNA¡¯s HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual, the app allows users to combine various types, sizes, shapes, and sections of ducting to calculate total allowable leakage. A pass or fail mark is assigned for duct air leakage tests, and a resulting report can be emailed directly from the mobile device. Version 2 of the DALC app is currently under development with the objective of creating a more robust tool that allows users the ability to edit runs while still generating and emailing the report. SMACNA¡¯s air duct leakage app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Android devices and can be downloaded free of charge from the device¡¯s app store, or by visiting <www.smacna.org/dalt>. SMACNA¡¯s HVAC Duct Construction App is complete and currently undergoing beta testing. The app applies to the construction of rectangular duct, provides options for joints and external and internal reinforcements, and generates fabrication reports and isometric drawings. These and other important developments on the technology front will be discussed at length in SMACNA¡¯s next Technical University program scheduled for September 9 and 10 in Chantilly, VA.
