The Mexican steel industry took advantage of high steel prices and recovery in demand to return to pre-Covid 19 production levels in 2021. It also planned to continue maintaining growth next year to increase annual production to reduce Mexico''s dependence on imports.
David Gutierrez Muguerza, director of the Canacero steel chamber and CEO of steelmaker Deacero, expressed that Mexico would produce around 19 million tons of steel in 2021. The production would continue to increase next year with the full launch of new plants.
However, steel manufacturers worried that if the constitutional power market overhaul proposed by the President of Mexico is approved, the government will not invest enough in power generation and transmission, resulting in insufficient power and affecting production.
