There¡¯s a reason Sara Yantachka has earned several certifications in safety through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
¡°When you¡¯re on a construction site, you have to really pay attention to what you¡¯re doing,¡± said the 30-year-old from Rochester, a fifth-year sheet metal apprentice at Leo J. Roth Corp. in Webster. ¡°You have to have your eyes and ears wide open even though you have earplugs in. You¡¯re trying to hang ductwork in one corner while somebody is chipping away at concrete in another corner, and people are yelling information back and forth.¡±
Employment openings for sheet metal workers are expected to increase 8.5 percent between 2014 and 2024, with 20 annual openings, reports the New York State Department of Labor. That¡¯s about as fast as the average for all occupations, with growth reflecting an anticipated increase in the number of industrial, commercial and residential structures built over the next decade.
There are both union and non-union companies in Rochester that hire sheet metal workers.
Yantachka appreciates the benefits and long-term financial security that comes with a union membership with Sheet Metal Workers¡¯ Local Union 46 in Rochester. Her apprenticeship requires taking classes two nights a week, seven months a year, to become proficient at any job in the field. That includes learning how to weld, read architectural specifications, draw layouts, and set up HVAC systems and controls.
During work hours, Yantachka, who has earned several other certifications and taken asbestos and lead awareness training programs through Local Union 46, makes and installs ductwork, fabricates electrical boxes and stainless steel counters, and worked on the escalators at the Amtrak train station downtown.
¡°They keep me very well-rounded,¡± she said.
Aside from having math skills, sheet metal workers need to be able to work well with others.
¡°Nobody wants to work with someone who doesn¡¯t want to work with them on a job site,¡± Yantachka said.
