Platts reported that US steel industry was struggling to quantify the impact of Hurricane Harvey as heavy rains continued to batter Houston, the country''s busiest port for steel imports and local manufacturing operations.
Ms Lisa Ashley a spokeswoman with the Port of Houston Authority, said the port closed at noon on Friday and was closed over the weekend and Monday. The port''s website said it would remain closed on Tuesday because of the "continued threat of inclement weather."
A trader said customers have been calling to check the status of their steel, but he said that he didn''t know the condition of the port and the warehouses.
Another trader said he expected delays in ship unloading due to the hurricane hitting Houston, but expected no significant impact in New Orleans. The trader said he was unable to check on the warehouses due to flooded roads, but he expected there to be damage to steel stored in warehouses.
The trader said that "I do know how they store some of the cold roll. The cold-rolled coils are usually in the cans on a small pallet on the ground. You know how cold roll is relatively sensitive. That will definitely cause a lot of material claims."
Steel mills are also still assessing the impact from the storm.
Commercial Metals Co. spokeswoman Susan Gerber said in a statement that "We are beginning to assess the damage from Hurricane Harvey; however, some areas are still inaccessible due to flooding and other debris blocking access. CMC Steel Texas, our mini mill in Seguin, Texas, was mostly untouched by the storm and has been operating normally. We do expect some shipments for the month to be pushed out due to the rain and flooding along the coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana."
