A Lithuanian consortium of laser manufacturers have produced one of the most powerful laser systems in the world, local media reported on Wednesday.

Laser manufacturers Ekspla and Light Conversion have produced a laser system called Sylos worth four million euros (4.22 million U.S. dollars) that is the first of its kind in Lithuania, Kestutis Jasiunas, the head of Ekspla, was quoted by Lithuanian news website delfi.lt as saying.

"First of all, this is one of the most powerful systems in the world which generates 10 femtoseconds and shorter impulses," Kestutis Jasiunas said.

Zenonas Kuprionis, Ekspla''s head of commerce, told news agency BNS that the laser had been produced only for a specific project for an international laser research organization in Hungary. The laser system will be used to conduct research on electron motion in atoms and molecules, reported delfi.lt.

"These kind of lasers are designed for research centers which need very extreme parameters, and that market is not big, there happens to be a few projects a year," Kuprionis told BNS.

It took two years for the consortium to produce the laser.

The laser industry in Lithuania, a Baltic country with a population of less than 3 million, has experienced rapid growth in recent years fuelled by cooperation between science and business.

From 2005 to 2015, the number of laser companies increased from 10 to 25, while annual sales in the sector have more than doubled, reaching 70 million euros in 2014, according to the latest data from the country''s laser association.
